Toronto personal injury and civil litigation firm announces leadership succession

Thomson Rogers LLP is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Birman as Managing Partner-Designate. Succeeding Stephen D’Agostino through a carefully planned leadership transition, Birman is set to become Managing Partner in 2027.
A certified specialist in civil litigation, Birman’s practice spans personal injury, long-term disability claims, institutional negligence and class actions. He is a precedent-setting litigator — most notably for his lead role in Baker v. Blue Cross, in which he and his team secured a landmark $1.5 million punitive damages award, the largest of its kind against a disability insurer in Canada. The Ontario Court of Appeal upheld the decision in 2023.
Birman regularly appears before the Superior Court of Justice and the License Appeal Tribunal.
“Stephen is a respected advocate and a thoughtful leader who understands both our clients and our culture,” said D’Agostino. “He will lead the firm with integrity, sound judgment and a clear commitment to excellence.”
Birman earned his law degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He joined Thomson Rogers as an associate in 2009 and has built his career at the firm over the past 17 years. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for personal injury litigation since 2024.
Partners elected Birman with resounding support.
“I am honoured by the confidence my partners have placed in me,” said Birman. “Thomson Rogers has a long history of client advocacy and excellence, and I look forward to building on that tradition while supporting the continued growth of the firm and the next generation of lawyers.”
D’Agostino (who has led the firm with distinction for over seven years) will remain as Managing Partner through the transition period, ensuring continuity of leadership and a seamless handover.
