Newborn neurological injury due to trauma occurring in and around birth (peripartum) is often profoundly disabling. For affected infants and their families these injuries can be life-altering, resulting in unfathomable burdens.

In doing so, this paper reviews neonatal neurologic injury in the context of a fetal systemic metabolic acidosis and in the alternate setting where neonatal neurologic injury is not accompanied by a fetal systemic metabolic acidosis.
