Super Bowl Sunday: Have Fun, But Stay Safe on the Roads
February 6, 2026

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most anticipated days of the year for sports fans, advertisers, and millions of viewers gathering to watch it. Fans look forward to the game, the halftime show, and spending time with family and friends. In fact, Vividata (a Canadian consumer insight platform) suggests one-fifth of Canadians will be watching the spectacle. While the festivities bring joy to many, there is also a hidden road safety concern that every fan should be aware of.
A study by researchers at the University of Toronto examined U.S. traffic accident data from the 27 Super Bowl Sundays between 1975 and 2001. The study found that car crashes increase significantly, by about 41 percent, in the hours after the game ends compared with typical Sundays.
On average, this translated to seven additional deaths and around 600 extra injuries following Super Bowl telecasts.
There are several reasons behind this spike in collisions. Many people celebrate the game with alcohol, which can impair judgment and reaction time. Others may be tired after a long day of watching and celebrating. Some drivers may even be distracted by replays of the game or disappointed by the outcome. All of these factors can contribute to unsafe driving behaviour once fans hit the road.
The University of Toronto study also noted that the greatest danger often occurs immediately after the game as large numbers of people leave watch parties and head home. This makes that period particularly high risk for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.
So while you enjoy the big game this year, please make safety part of your celebration plan. Consider designating a sober driver, using a ride-share service, or staying overnight if you’ve been drinking. Being thoughtful about how and when you travel can make a life-saving difference.
