So, when I started here in 1998, I realized that personal injury lawyers are brilliant, but they are often terrible at math. So, I created a spreadsheet that can be used by all personal injury lawyers throughout Ontario to quantify the value of personal injury claims. It’s called the Ontario Personal Injury Damages Calculator.
How can lawyers utilize the calculator?
The software can be used throughout various stages of litigation. The software is designed to be a fancy calculator for the personal injury lawyer to evaluate what it means to their client in terms of annual losses, in terms of their pain and suffering entitlement, with interest, after applying the deductible and after applying contributory negligence impacts.
There are also pages within the software which are vital to competent personal injury representation, like the mediation genie page, which takes offers that are exchanged between the parties and breaks down who gets what.
Should lawyers use the Ontario Personal Injury Damages Calculator?
Lawyers who aren’t using the Ontario Personal Injury Damages Calculator are at risk of making mathematical errors to their peril. It’s a way to accurately quantify cases, and a way to accurately present the figures to your clients that accords with the Law Society’s strict rules on contingency fee agreements.
