“I don’t think they’ve had the chance to absorb the loss of their son, but it’s been a long time coming for Wendy to see her daughter,” said Darcy Merkur in a CBC article on his client’s first encounter seeing her baby Verena following a tragic car crash in Sault Ste. Marie.

On January 7th, a van veered into on-coming traffic hitting Wendy Hinan’s car head-on. The impact ultimately killed hers and Dave Hinan’s two-year old son, Devereaux. Wendy, seven-months pregnant at the time, was rushed to have an emergency C-section. Both baby and mom were in critical condition, and sent to separate hospitals for care.

However, this week, Wendy got to meet her baby for the first time. A bittersweet moment given the tragedy. As Darcy explains, “I understand there were a lot of tears and joy in the room.”
