Choosing the right family lawyer can make all the difference. Thomson Rogers’ Partner Megan Edmiston shares her insights on what to consider before making that important decision.

Hiring a family lawyer is a big decision. This is a person who is going to be entrusted with helping your family, and so it is a big decision. It is a special relationship that you’re going to have with a professional.

What should I look for in a family lawyer?

There are a few things that you should consider when you’re about to hire a family lawyer. You should get a few options and speak to different people about who they liked working with, what they liked about it, and what they didn’t like about it. So, it’s very important to research the lawyer you wish to work with, represent you, and take charge of your family’s future. You should understand what their communication style is, what to expect in terms of billing practices, what their philosophy is, and how their team works.

What are the challenges?

We have, believe it or not, heard and seen it all. There’s very little that you can tell us that will cause us to look at you differently. It’s a difficult time in your life, but it’s hard sometimes for clients to tell us all of these things because they are so personal to them, and they are not used to talking to anybody about it, let alone a professional.

What is your goal for your clients?

I want to get you to the other side of this. I’m going to help you secure your objectives. We’re going to get through this, and you’re going to move on and build the next stage of your life.

If you think we might be the right team for you, given our experience with complicated matters, reach out to our office to see whether we can assist and are a good fit for you.
