May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

May 9, 2017

We post lots of articles and information about motorcycle safety and attend many events with the motorcycle community. This is because many of our clients have been injured in motorcycle accidents. While we do our best to help each victim and get them the compensation they deserve, we proactively advocate for safety in the hopes of reducing motorcycle-related injuries.

On the road, motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle. They’re entitled to the same space in order to ride safely on any road or highway. In doing so, motorcycles must also adhere to the same rules as the rest of the vehicles on the road in order to maintain safe roadways for drivers and riders alike.

In the last five years, the Ontario Provincial Police have reported that 164 motorcyclists and their passengers were in a fatal traffic collision in Ontario; this does not include the riders who were seriously injured and may have sustained life-changing injuries.

The most common types of severe injuries from motorcycle accidents:

  • Head and Brain Injuries from the head violently contacting other vehicles or objects. Riders who wear a helmet significantly reduce the risk of injury and death.
  • Breaking Bones and Joints (most common breakages are elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and wrists)
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Lacerations and Abrasions
  • Permanent Physical and Emotional Scars

During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and all year for that matter, drivers of all vehicles are reminded to pay extra attention for riders and share the road appropriately.
