Family Law matters often require experts to provide insights on various issues in a case. Thomson Rogers’ Family Law Partner, Camelia Amiri, explains why.
Often times, at trial, we rely on experts to give evidence on different areas that they are well versed in so that they can assist the court in kind of taking that information and breaking it down in a digestible way for everybody.
What kind of Family Law cases need an expert?
Suppose a party’s financial circumstances are not straightforward. In that case, we may hire somebody like a certified business evaluator to request information from the other side and then analyze that information once it is provided.
What does the expert do in a typical case?
Sometimes, our clients hand over information because we’ve hired somebody, and sometimes, they respond to another side’s expert report or analyze the other side’s information as it comes in and prepare an independent report.
We often also hire experts like psychologists, social workers or psychiatrists to meet with the parties, meet with the children, meet with any collaterals, and also provide an opinion as to what’s in the child’s best interest as it relates to parenting arrangements.
We frequently also hire appraisers to value property. Often, we have clients with an extensive art or wine collection, and we may need people who also appraise those assets. That’s a very niche area where we obviously need to hire out to get assistance. We need people who have specialties in different fields to assist us with family law matters because it intersects different areas of life.
